This land is one of the most ancient known locations of plant domestication and the beginning of agriculture. Evidence for the presence of human beings in the interior dates back at least 40,000 years. The country of Papua New Guinea is rugged with great diversity of cultures and languages. Although the great central basins of highland New Guinea were densely settled by a million or more people practicing a sophisticated agriculture, the people were not known to the outside world until the 1930's.
